Mini Borg Guide Scopes

The Mini Borg scope provides a solid base upon which very compact and stable guide scope systems may be built:

See the hands-on review article [pdf] by Craig Stark in the November 2008 issue of Astronomy Technology Today.

  • Mini Borg 50 Basic Guide System:
    • AG50B: Mini Borg with drawtube focuser
    • AG50B2: Mini Borg with precision helical focuser (#7315)
Mini Borg 50 Deluxe Guide System:
    • AG50DX: Mini Borg with drawtube focuser + X-Y Offset Positioner
    • AG50DX2: Mini Borg with precision helical focuser (#7315) + X-Y Offset Positioner
  • Mini Borg 60ED Guider/Imaging System
The Mini Borg 50 features a high quality achromatic doublet objective (optics made in Japan) with a focal length of 250mm (f/5).

The Mini Borg 60ED guider/imaging scope is an f/3.8 optical system with greater light grasp than the Mini Borg 50, yet does not require a field-of-view compromise, and works well for imaging as a bonus due to its well-corrected ED lens objective.

The Mini Borg guide scopes are much lighter than other scopes, an important factor contributing to an imaging setup which does not suffer differential flexure, whether mounted in piggy-back or side-by-side configuration:
  • Mini Borg 50 basic guide scope weight: 390g
  • Mini Borg 50 deluxe guide scope weight: 630g
The optional X-Y offset positioner allows the CCD camera's sensor to be moved around the guide scope field of view (±12mm X and Y travel) so that the number of available guide stars is maximized. The X-Y offset positioner is compact (120mm x 120mm x 18mm) and lightweight (240g). This approach allows for the flexibility of positioning the guide camera, yet eliminates the need to use 3-point ring systems which are prone to causing flexure problems.

Mini Borg guiders can be selected with a sliding drawtube forcuser, or alternatively with a precision helical focuser to insure that all connections in the guider system are threaded and rigidly coupled to eliminate the guide scope flexure problems common with heavy guide cameras.

To couple the guide scope to the autoguider camera, a variety of options, including T-thread, 2", and 1.25" nosepiece connections can be accommodated as can be seen in the examples below.

Guide Camera Connection Sample Configurations:

- Via camera T-threads
[Mini Borg] - 7522 - [X-Y Positioner] - 7362 - 7522 (or 7315)
- Via camera 1.25" nosepiece
[Mini Borg] - 7522 - [X-Y Positioner] - 7317 (or 7315)
- Via 2"/1.25" nosepiece cameras
[Mini Borg] - 7425 (or 7356) - 7522 - [X-Y Positioner] - 7362 - 7522 (or 7315 or 7317)
