00-024 "The Lost Luggage Belt"
2000, acrylic on illustration board

In 1991, I was making my first flight to Florida (the Cape, of course), when I learned that half my luggage was lost during the connection in Atlanta, Georgia. While the errant suitcases were eventually found and returned, it did get me thinking: where do all the permanently misplaced bags go? Well, now you have your answer: the lost luggage belt, a vast celestial swarm of carry-ons and cargo-hold contents tumbling slowly through the void. I should point out that I have in earlier works explained the special case of car keys - they are on the moon.

A future work will discuss missing socks. But for now, look for your suitcase, golf clubs...and good heavens, a cat carrier! Do I see a pair of feline eyes therein? The blue suitcase belongs to a friend of mine who always tapes a white letter "M" as a distinctive marking, and the adorable stuffed hippopotamus is none other than Herman, my wife's trusted travel companion.
