Faintly visible to the naked eye under the best conditions, the oval glow of M33 is well revealed by moderate amateur telescopes and good binoculars if skies are dark. Smaller than M31 or our galaxy, M33 is still a beautiful spiral - although the spiral texture is really seen only on photographs. This object is closer than any other large galaxies except M31 and the Magellenic Clouds (sadly not visible in the northern hemisphere), so it looms larger than several full moons; use wide angle lenses or bincoulars to catch this neighbor "just" 2.4 million light years away.
