A cooled camera option is now available for DSLR users via a modified Canon 6D body. This modification does not allow for normal use of the camera, but brings all of the advantages of a cooled sensor for astronomical targets, while still allowing imaging without requiring that a computer be tethered to the camera.
Features:
  • Sealed sensor chamber allows for maximized cooling capability while preventing dew formation
  • Slightly heated chamber glass suppresses fogging
  • Built-in thermometer for real time monitoring and dark frame control
  • Sensor cooling 25° Celsius below ambient
  • Drop-in 52 mm filter (or 48 mm with a step ring)
  • 44.00 mm EF-mount flange back
  • No mirror box vignetting (advantageous for mosaic imaging)
  • Precision optical axis adjustment system (factory-aligned)
  • Astronomical UV/IR blocking or clear filter available
  • Weight: 1.5 kg
  • Power required: 2.5A/12V (max 3A at startup)

Uncooled, T= 28°C, 20MB.

Cooled, T= 2°C, 1.8MB.
Above are comparison images (ISO 1600, 30 minutes). While the images may appear to the eye to be similar, the jpeg compressed image from the uncooled camera is over 20MB in sized vs. 1.8MB from the cooled camera, indicating the relatively large amount of noise in the uncooled image. Note:
  1. This modified body has no mechanical shutter. Thus only "bulb" mode long exposures are possible.
  2. The body has no viewfinder mirror. Image framing must be done using the LCD screen (live view).
  3. Auto-exposure (AE) and auto-focus (AF) modes are disabled.
