94-009 "Alan O'Saurus"
1994 acrylic on illustration board

Al here is not a Velociraptor, although after Jurassic Park many viewers thought so. Scale is hard to show in the primeval world, with no cars, buildings, or people to show alongside. Al is an Allosaurus, hence the name Al, and he's fully twice the size of the movie's critters. Think of him as a smaller T-rex. The environment we see him in is somewhere in the forests of what would eventually become Wyoming, and those lush ferns bespeak a much wetter climate. In truth, I wanted to set the scene in a verdant glade because my mom loved ferns and complained that most of my art was too barren. C'mon, Ma...I'm a space artist!
